Dear Wonderful Friends,
We are closing in on the end of the school year here in Ecuador. So many spiritual truths we want to leave with the children before they head out, some for the last time. We have some amazing advances in understanding and in academics; and then some children with whom we have seen little progress. I look forward to the end of classes because I need a vacation but I also hurt for those that did not chose to be touched. We pray that God will move in their hearts soon.
Special blessings and testimonies from the Lord are important to share as they cause all of us to reflect and learn.
First were those of you who reached out to Sindi, our little half-blind student in the jungle. Your passion and kindness really touches our hearts and hers. I have heard very little about Sindi in the last two months, except that the teachers continue to pour into her and she is advancing in math. The village is in its yearly flood season so school and information is spotty.
We had our great friends, Kevin and Karin Christ, come down from Texas for a day with a missions group to bless our Tambo kids and teachers. The Lord surprised us by reversing the blessing process, and He flowed to deeply bless the visiting team through a song the teachers sang.
Last week was Pentecost and the time when the children bring their thank-you gifts to God. Every child came with something: carrots, rice, lentils, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, etc. One child who knew she could not come for the program, brought her offering the day before so she would not miss her opportunity to bless God. The needy families that received the food were moved to tears.
Finally, a testimony from one of our teachers this week. Bear with me.
The mountain road in and out of Tambo is at a notable incline. It is the only access from Quito to the jungle and all of the big transports use it. Irene, our teacher, lives by a sharp bend and the bridge half-way through town. The gorge under the bridge is about a 30 foot drop to the small river.
Accidents are a common occurrence at the bend and the bridge but there have been fewer deaths since Irene began to pray for the safety of the drivers. This week, as she was crossing the four-lane road, an 18-wheeler slowly passed her headed downhill. As she watched it pass, it did not turn for the bend but simply continued straight through the cement barriers at the side of the bridge and went over the side of the cliff. Irene immediately spoke out: “Jesus! Save him! Jesus!” The cab stopped at that moment, hanging over the cliff, but did not disconnect from the trailer. The driver emerged through the passenger-side window and climbed over his truck to solid ground.
Her testimony was a powerful lesson to the school children that they can have the full attention of Jesus when they call on His Name. Just saying His Name can save lives.
We must not be hesitant to call out the mighty Name of Jesus for any and all situations that are not right. He promises that whatever we ask in His Name He would give His attention to it.
We have two prayer requests:
- We really do need someone to disciple our teachers in the jungle. Commitment of three months.
- Regular prayer of safety for our school bus service which consists of three vehicles.
